Community-on-the-Verge

Two community members share produce from the community garden

Community-on-the-Verge is a food garden on the perimeter of Alstonville Anglicans Church, St Bartholomew’s, on the corner of Daley Street and The Avenue, Alstonville NSW 2477. Veggies, fruit, edible plants, and herbs are planted. Anyone and everyone in the community is invited to harvest for their needs.

The CoVe is not just about growing food, it is about connecting people. A key feature of the garden is wheelchair accessible garden beds and inclusive design.

The Food Garden will place confidence in the Alstonville villagers to

· harvest and plant,

· care for the earth,

· care for people,

· take and give their fair share.

While Alstonville Anglicans take responsibility for coordinating the garden, we want the Community-on-the-Verge to be owned, shared, and enjoyed by the whole of Alstonville and the surrounding villages.

BENEFITS OF COVE

  • The garden is a hub for people to connect with others. All belong, the NDIS community is warmly embraced by inclusive design.

  • There are environmental advantages such as attracting bees and other healthy and necessary organisms to the area.

  • We grow what we need where we need it. The harvest is fresh and nutritious. Food miles are decreased.

SOME FUTURE GOALS OF COVE

  • Creating accessibility for wheelchairs.

  • Creating a “garden pantry” where people can place excess food or take if they need.

  • Building an outdoor commercial pizza oven to host regular community feasts.

All are invited to make the food garden theirs.
